Our History
In 1957, Mzee Samwel Onyona Khoyi a catholic Bible Teacher started it as a church school under the Catholic Missionaries. He was teaching the word of God to the community as well as to teach young ones knowledge skill (CLASS).
He was assisted by the following old Wazees who were the area members: Mzee Japheth Soro, Mzee Kakim Owito, Mzee Giriama Sarota, Mzee Manema Akede, Mzee Nicholas Ogutu Ngwala, Mzee Daniel Ojango Oure (Jakochia), Mzee Maugo and Mzee Casmiel Owino.
Among these Wazees, the following donated the land whereby the school was built: Mzee Nicholas Ogutu Ngwala, Mzee Manema Akede and Mzee Daniel Ojango Oure. It proceeded on within the hands of the following teachers; Mr. Peterlis Ojwok, Eliakim, Mr. Mangira Carey under DEB by then.
In 1960, Mr. Vincent Miginjo (Gem-Yala) Head teacher and his deputy was Mr. Okeyo all were from central Nyanza. In 1964, Mr. Mark Odede (Gwassi) became the H/Teacher and Mr. Adrian Ouma Achola came from Isebania primary to become the deputy during this period. Abwao first did CEE Exams after which it became an Intermediate school and the sat for KAPE Exams in 1960s. Mr. Michael O. Nyamwaya, Mr. Paul Nene, Joseph Oile (primary head teacher at Abwao).
In 1968, the late senior and then chief Mzee Musa Okelo Odhul (Wiga Kanyathocho Clan) held public baraza at Mukuro shopping centre and told the area members to build a Harambee Secondary school for both Boys and Girls so that when time comes in future it will serve as a big secondary school to achieve the Education in the location. He predicted that years will come when he is not there in life but Abwao will be a very big school where even people from far will bring their children to learn.
In the year 1973 the Mzee Musa Okelo and the area M.P Mr. Lawrence Oguda Kokwiri started the school as a Harambee Mixed school under Mr. Adrian A. Ouma who by the time was the H/teacher of Abwao primary school. the school proceeded up to KCSE in 1976. After that the area M.P Mr. John H. Okwanyo came out and moved all facilities like beds, chairs, and cooking utensils to Kakrao, Bware and Kadika.
In 1983, M.P Mr. Simon Gor Misiani reopened it together with schools like Nyandema, Bande Girls and Raabwao in Kadem location. From this point Abwao gained its position as school under Mr. Adrian A. Ouma as H/teacher again. After Mr. A. Ouma, then follows the following Head teachers;
